Children are accepted into the Nursery at Agincourt School in the half term of their third birthday. The nursery follows the curriculum guidelines as laid down by the Welsh Assembly government in their Foundation Phase documentation. The recommendations are that children learn best through play and active learning.
The Nursery children occupy two classrooms, one is specifically designed for messy play and there is a larger carpeted room where the activities on offer change frequently. They also have sole use and free access to a fenced undercover outdoor area with equipment to provide a physical challenge, imaginative opportunities for investigation and exploration, sand and water play. The Nursery children also make full use of the school grounds where the field, playground, pond, butterfly garden and outdoor classroom offer numerous opportunities for learning. There are trained forest school staff on site who provide further enrichment activities for the children.
Every child in the Nursery feels valued, secure and is appropriately challenged by our supportive team of highly qualified and experienced staff. The small class sizes ensure that every child is nurtured, receives individual attention and experiences a happy introduction to life at Agincourt.
We aim to foster a love of language by introducing the children to some Welsh vocabulary and songs in their time in the Nursery class.
The children make preparation for reading with activities designed to provide a strong foundation of concepts and skills essential for the development of reading. These might include sequencing, jigsaws, threading, memory and matching games. They will start to recognise familiar letters, listen to and enjoy stories and learn rhymes and songs by heart. The children begin their early phonic development with a new letter sound introduced each week and start to reinforce knowledge of their letter sounds through songs and games.
The Nursery children also benefit from specialist dance teaching and have a weekly ‘Twinkles’ lesson from a music specialist where they are able to develop their creative skills. Other popular activities include drama, cooking and regular trips off site.
With countless opportunities for imaginative play, physical challenge and exploration our children thrive. When you visit the Nursery at Agincourt you will find the children to be focused, stimulated and above all, happy.
